Estevão and Mena Gomes were born in Cape Verde, an archipelago located 500km off the west coast of Africa. However, for distinct reasons, they both had to leave the country in search of a better life.
Estevão travelled to Senegal, where he found a job in a merchant vessel, and Mena moved to Lisbon. It was in the Portuguese capital where they first met. The couple married in 1990 and, six years later, they decided to settle in London.
Being from the same country is not the only aspect connecting the two. Inspired by their family roots, Estevão and Mena love cooking. Mena explains:
“I like to see people well fed and happy. I think, as well, when you do a nice cook and you bring your family together, they are more happy.”
Their passion for food led them to write Taste of Mozambique, a cookbook full of quick and easy meals. Through the book, which already has over 400,000 likes on Facebook, Estevão and Mena hope to inspire Londoners to live healthier lives.
In the future, they want to keep on encouraging people – particularly the younger generation – to cook, eat and be active.
