Diogo Costa: Giving a voice to young people in Lambeth

Born in the UK, Diogo Costa was brought up by Portuguese parents – who left Portugal in 1996. In London, the now 17-year-old grew up in a multicultural environment, where he was able to meet people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Currently studying at a secondary school in the London borough of Lambeth, Diogo hopes to study Computer Science in the future – but he does not dismiss his passion for politics.

Last year, one of Diogo’s teachers suggested he should run for Lambeth Youth Mayor. As someone who is eager for social change, Diogo decided to go for it.

Now elected, he is a spokesperson for Lambeth’s youth and hopes to use his role to inspire more people to get involved in politics – including Portuguese-speakers who live in the borough.

“I thought it was a great opportunity for me to run as Youth Mayor, I wanted to provide a bigger voice for young people.”

For now, Diogo wants to stay in London, kick-start his career and keep on supporting the local community. But one thing is for sure: he is one to look out for!
